Sounds and vibrations

We are learning all about sounds and hearing.
Today we made an elastic guitar and we noticed that the bigger the elastic is the lower the note it makes.
The opposite is true too.  The smaller the elastic is the higher the sound it makes.

Teacher had a tuning fork.
She showed us how it makes a note and we all took turns listening the the note it makes.
Next she showed us what happens when you put the vibrating tuning fork in water.  It makes a huge splash.  We found this hard to do, but once you get good at it, it is really spectacular.

Teacher also showed us how a ping pong ball will bounce when you put a vibrating tuning fork against it.

We were able to get rice to vibrate and jump just by putting the vibrating tuning fork against the rice cup.
Finally we listened to what spoons sound like when you tap them against a table and hold their string outside your ear.  We could hear all sorts of different bells!  Again, the larger the spoon the lower the bell's note and the smaller the spoon the higher pitched the sound of the bell.

Animal Life Cycles

Today we learned all about the life cycle of a chicken.

We then completed this cut out activity where we had to remember the stages in sequence.
We also learned about the life cycle of a frog recently.
We sequenced the stages from frogspawn to frog.
 We made these cute frogs.

Make a lever:- wag the dog's tail

As part of our lesson on pushes and pulls (forces) we made these dog levers. The dog sticks out its tongue when you wag its tail.. We  learned that when you push or pull one part of a lever you make a push or pull on another part in the opposite direction.

Planting sunflowers

We have been learning all about growing plants and seeds and the conditions necessary for growth. We know that plants need sun, soil and water to grow. We decided to plant some sunflower seeds. We will take good care of them and watch them grow.

Exploring our sense of smell

Today we played an investigation game. There were 8 secret bottles. Using our sense of smell we had to decide what was inside the bottles.  Teacher tried it too.  She didnt look at the answer sheet and kept it tucked away in her pocket.  Some children were extremely good at idenrifying what the smells were.  You should try your own version at home.  This activity gets the children thinking for themselves. They are not told what they are smelling but rather calling on their past experiences to reach their own conclusion. It is through simple activities like this that children gain confidence in using their knowledge to come to a conclusion.
