Acids or alkalis in Senior Infants

We did an interesting experiment recently testing things like vinegar, coke, lemon juice ,orange juice and toothpaste to see if they were acid or alkali. If they contained acid, red cabbage juice turned a reddy/pink colour. If they were alkali,it went blue green. We saw that lots of the drinks we drink have a lot of acid in them and we learned that toothpaste is an alkali and alkalis counteract the effects of acids. So when we drink coke or orange juice, we should make sure we brush our teeth after!
