Space and Rockets Open Day

We had a marvelous day today - showing, explaining, demonstrating, launching rockets and of course having fun!
We know lots and lots about space and rockets and we were so happy to share what we know with all the other classes.
Here are the photos of our class demonstrating all about space and rockets to:
Ms. B.Fitzgerald's class (Jun Inf), Ms. Moran's class, Ms. Connolly's class (1st), Ms. McCaul's/Ms. Lally's class (2nd), Ms. O'Connor's/Ms. Lavery's class (2nd), Ms. Lane's class (Jun Inf), Mr. Faherty's class (2nd), Ms. Needham's and Ms. Coade's classes, Ms. Cunningham's class (2nd), Ms. Flannery's class (Sen Inf) and Ms. Maguire's class (1st):
And our demonstration of air and water rockets to all classes in the school in the yard:

Bubble show with Scientific Sue

All students and teachers in our school went to see an amazing show today in the hall for science week.

Sue taught us all about bubbles.
It was such an incredibly fun show!
A big Thank You to the Galway Science and Technology Festival for sending us such a thrilling show!

Learning about gravity

We learned a lot about gravity today.
We learned that everything is pulled to earth by gravity.
A ball of paper will fall faster than a page of paper regardless of weight because of air resistance.
A feather will fall more slowly than a hammer (though not if you are on the moon where there is no air resistance at all)
Two bottles of water will fall at exactly the same time even if one is a full bottle of water and the other bottle is empty!

What happens to sweets in fizzy drinks?

We were wondering what would happen to jelly sweets if  we put them in fizzy drinks?
We tried this out.
We put some jellies into water and into fizzy drinks and we had a look to see what happened.
By Monday:

The sweets in water seem to have grown. They look bigger and the colours have gone out of them, but they are still in the water.
The sweets in the fizzy drinks seem to have disappeared.

We think that the fizzy drink dissolved the sweets.............that's not good news for those of us who drink lots of fizzy drinks and also hope to have nice strong white teeth!
