Discover Primary Science Programme

Scoil Chaitríona Junior

Contribution from Senior Infants (R.5)
Room 5 is very involved in the Discover Primary Science Programme. We usually do our science with Mrs. Newell, Margaret and the kids from Room 4. We are entering the Award of Excellence this year and are busy working towards it. Some of the things we have had to do for it are:

We have kept a discovery log of all the science we are doing. It is a black folder with photos of all our science work. Just ask to see it anytime.

We have done lots and lots of experiments. Teacher shows us how and then we all get a chance to try them on our own or with our friends.

Elijah’s mum came to visit our class and told us all about being a scientist working in Medtronic. It was so interesting.

We had our own Science Open Day in January. Room 4 and Room 5 hosted an open day in Room 5 classroom. We manned the tables and gave families and friends a chance to see what experiments we did so far this year.

We have done lots of other science projects:
We are registered for the Green Flag programme.
We will do the Greenwave Project like we did last year- we are watching the Horse Chestnut Tree across the road from the school, the ash trees in the school grounds, and Ms. McLoughlin is watching the hawthorn at her home.
We have a new school website.
Our teachers have gone on science courses during the summer.
We have the http://www.science.ie/ newsletter on our computer.
We will do more science later this year….earthworms, butterflies, vegetables, kites, bubbles, farm etc.
We are doing lots of our own projects – science experiments we find in other places, apart from the Discover Primary Science programme. For example, we have tried bath tricks and made lever men. More of these kinds of experiments to come.

Don’t forget to ask us all about the exciting things we do in school each day!

June 2007: Ms. Broderick's (R.2) and Ms. Flaherty's (R.3) Senior Infant classes are being visited by a Mad Scientist, once a week for 6 weeks. They are doing amazing scietific experiments. They have wonderful photos on the walls of the corridors to show what they are up to. Why not take a look?
