10 years of science awards!

We have received an Award of Science and Math Excellence
every year
for 10 YEARS!
We are so proud!
Today Aine Scully from Abbott came to present us with a fabulous star shaped plaque and a cheque for Shaw's Scientific, to buy ourselves some science equipment.
Thank you so much Aine!
We had some wonderful talks from Ms. Lavery's class who told us all about the heart, Ms. Ferguson's class who told us of their beach safari and Ms. Costello's class who told of their trip to the aquarium.
Aine also went to Mr. Carleton's and Ms. Connolly's classes where she heard all about the Junior First Lego robotics league.

Aine finished up in our class where she heard all about space.  She even had time to visit our garden and to help us launch water rockets.
Many thanks for your wonderful visit Aine!

The science of bubbles

We had lots of fun with bubbles today.
First of all we looked at the different colours that bubbles change into as they go from a new bubble into ones that are just about to burst.
Watch out for gold and then silver bubbles.  These are the ones that are closest to bursting.
We also used our hands to get bubbles to fly in different directions.
Do you know that you can catch a bubble on your finger, if your finger is wet.  We tried this.
We worked in pairs and we tried out all these interesting things for ourselves.

Releasing our butterflies

 We released our butterflies today.
It is EXACTLY 5 weeks since we got our caterpillars in the post.
We were so sorry to see them fly away but we are so happy that they are free to enjoy this lovely sunshine.
We hope they are happy and that they lay lots of little eggs so their lifecycle can begin all over again.

5 pretty butterflies

All 5 of our butterflies are out of their cocoons at last.
We are thrilled.
We will let them fly away tomorrow.
Our Painted Lady butterflies are so pretty.
Don't worry about the red spots, they are not blood, that is just left over colouring from their wings!

We have a butterfly

After 4 weeks and 3 days...............
............ Sparks has arrived!
He is the very first of our butterflies to emerge from his cocoon.
We are so proud of him.
Now his cocoon looks very empty.

We have left some banana, some apple and some sugared water for Sparks to drink over the weekend.
We hope his friends will emerge from their cocoons too.

Harvesting potatoes

Kay helped us today in the garden.
We planted out the runner beans that have been climbing up the pipes in our classroom.
We removed slugs and snails, threw away dead leaves and best of all we harvested potatoes and ate some lovely fresh cabbage and lettuce.
We look forward to a tasty dinner of organic spuds and cabbage!
