Electrics in Room 5

On October 24th, 2007, Room 4 and Room 5 got together for a session on Electricity. First of all we talked about the sun and the moon, and night and day.



After that we talked about staying safe with electricity (plugs, kites, wires etc.).
Next teacher gave every pair of students a bulb, a battery and two wires and we had to make a circuit to get the bulb lighting. That wasn't too hard, but then teacher took away one wire and we had to get the bulb lighting.
When we were good at this we made our own lighthouses out of kitchen rolls, bulbs, bulb holders, batteries, wires and yoghurt pots. We are very proud of our lighthouses.

Fizzy Rockets


Room 5, October 19th 2007.
We exploded rockets outside today. The teacher put water and fizzy tablets into containers for us. We put on the lids and then counted 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 BLAST OFF. The rockets exploded, but not always at the right time. It was very exciting.

St. Brigit's Garden








2 classes of Junior Infants (Mrs. Keenan and Ms. Tierney), 3 classes of Senior Infants (Ms. McLoughlin, Ms. Ferguson and Ms. Flaherty), the special class and one Language Class went on tour to St. Brigid's garden on Thursday, October 18th 2007 and Friday, October 19th.
This report is from Ms. McLoughlin's class: We had a fantastic day. We went there by bus and we were very careful to wear all our seatbelts. When we got to the garden we were taken around by a very nice lady named Louise. She took us on a walk through the woods and then we did some bughunting with minibeasts. We were minibeast detectives. We listened to bird songs. A robin came to sit on the tree beside us and sing to us. We looked for nuts, mushrooms and berries. We collected nuts, seeds and berries. We even used instruments and went for a little parade. We learned so much about leaves, berries and seeds. It was great fun.

Megaphones


Room 5, October 11th, 2007. We made megaphones from yoghurt pots, toilet rolls and string containers. They make our voices sound louder than usual.

We can make chicken sounds with a yoghurt pot, a string and some water to wet our fingers.

String Telephones

11th October, 2007. Senior Infants, Room 5.We made string telephones from yoghurt pots and some string. Our telephones work well when the string is pulled tight. We can't hear any sounds when the string is not tight.

Green School

Litter Picking.
Room 5 went litter picking on October 4th, 2007.
We picked up the litter beside our classroom.
We like to keep our school clean.

Strange Sounds

October 3rd, 2007
In Room 5 we had a lot of fun trying out sounds with Room 4.

We used tins, cling film and rice or sand to see sound. When we bang tins together the rice and the sand on the cling film jump.


We could feel sound when we whispered or talked into a balloon. What a funny feeling!
We made weird sounds with balloons, grass and straws.

We made a guitar from an ice cream container and different sized elastic bands. The smaller the elastic band the higher the note and the bigger the elastic band the lower the note.

Our Horse Chestnut tree in Autumn




We are watching our horse chestnut tree in all seasons. In Autumn it looks like this: The leaves of the horse chestnut have seven pieces. This is the tree that has conkers in Autumn.
