High and Low Sounds

We talked a lot today about high and low sounds today. Teacher had a whistle that has a sliding piece. We discovered that when the whistle is short, that the sound it makes is high, but when the whistle is long (when the sliding piece is pulled out) the sound it makes is low. We tried this with two different whistles and the result was the same both times. We discovered some other things in the classroom that act in a similar way. A straw can be made to whistle if you cut the top in a certain way. We discovered that short straws make high sounds, while long straws make much lower sounds.
Next we tried rubber bands. We listened to the sounds the bands make when we pluck them. We even tried singing the notes the bands made. This time the result was no surprise - small rubber bands make high sounds when plucked, while bigger bands make much lower sounds.
